The dangers of DIY electrical work

Sometimes when we have a frayed cord here or a sparking power point there, we may think we have the capability to fix these ourselves and save ourselves a few dollars. Unfortunately, electricity is extremely unforgiving for those who are uninitiated and unqualified to work with it. There are several shocks, electrocutions and even deaths reported each year in Australia from people who thought they could do their own electrical work, instead of calling in a licensed electrician.

DIY electrical work dangerous

People who carry out electrical work without having attained an electrical licence, risk the lives of themselves and others.

If your electrical work is unsafe and live wires are left exposed, electric shock, electrocution and death can result.

It’s illegal to do unlicenced electrical work

In Australia, you cannot carry out electrical work without an electrical licence. You risk heavy penalties if you undertake unlicensed electrical work, of up to $40,000 for individuals.

Unlicensed work that causes a death or grievous bodily harm attracts a maximum penalty of $100,000 for an individual ($500,000 for a corporation) or two years’ imprisonment.

If the unlicensed work causes multiple deaths, the maximum penalty is $200,000 for an individual ($1,000,000 for a corporation) or three years’ imprisonment.

It could leave you uninsured

House fires can result from the lack of electrical knowledge and the use of inappropriate wiring and fittings.

If property damage occurs due to unlicensed electrical work being carried out, your insurer can refuse to pay the claim.

Electricity needs to be respected at all times. To save a few dollars, you could potentially be in a life-threatening situation, a house fire or worse, cause the death of someone else!
